Any tile ratio · 20% typical waste

Pro

Diagonal (45°)

The grid, rotated 45°. Visually widens narrow rooms.

When to use

A straight grid rotated 45°, so tiles meet the walls at corners rather than edges. The diagonal lines draw the eye outward, making small or narrow rooms feel larger. Generates the most perimeter cuts of any layout — budget 20%+ waste and order extra tile.

Recommended tile sizes

Square tiles read best diagonally — 8"×8", 12"×12", 18"×18". Rectangles work but the visual effect is weaker than with squares.

Typical waste

Budget around 20% extra tile when ordering. The planner uses this as the default when you compute boxes-needed — override per project if your installer is more or less efficient.
