When to use
Pairs of tiles laid horizontally alternate with pairs laid vertically, mimicking the over-under of woven cloth. A staple of Victorian-era hallways and modern bathroom floors when you want texture without a directional pattern. Symmetrical, so it doesn't push the eye one direction.
Recommended tile sizes
Strict 2:1 rectangles only — 6"×12", 4"×8", 3"×6" subway. The pattern depends on the exact 2:1 geometry; other ratios will fall back to straight.
Typical waste
Budget around 12% extra tile when ordering. The planner uses this as the default when you compute boxes-needed — override per project if your installer is more or less efficient.
